October.

Another month! We made it through Ramadan and Eid without anything too dramatic happening here. Some folks expected a major attack. But it was pretty quiet.

I’ll be heading to Camp Phoenix on October 20th, which is pretty exciting. The bad news is that it’s not actually inside Kabul. It’s a few miles outside of the city, and it looks just like Salerno. And I doubt I’ll be able to actually get into Kabul proper. But it’s still a break in the monotony. And apparently I’ll have my very own shipping container to live in. I just realized I haven’t posted any photos of my living quarters here. I’ll get on that.

I’m a little bummed that I’m missing out on a proper Fall. It’s still a balmy 95 degrees or so during the day. Apparently it’s much colder in Kabul. It’s supposed to snow and everything. That might make getting out in December a little challenging.

I don’t know you, but found your blog on a search for news about Camp Phoenix. When you get there, look for a DOD Civilian named Terry Johnson. He is my son in law…and is on a 6 month civil deployment like it sounds you are! He’s a Quality Assurance Analyst or some similar title and employed by Dept of Defense. I know he’s lonely and having a rough time over there. He’s there until middle of January. Since he does QA, he’s been to several camps checking on things…and he thinks Phoenix is the best he’s seen. Sounds like you are there providing education for the troops through another employer. Good luck….hope it goes well and you stay safe. Terry’s had a couple close calls when having to travel from base to base, but the soldiers take good care of him. JoAnne

maybe you can brighten up your shipping container with a different color palette? i hear “bursts” of color is the way to go anyway. i can find you a poster of some hot rod or something if you want. just let me know.

I would think that an Army base in Afghanistan would be the last place one would want “bursts” of anything. But that’s just me.

Don’t worry about fall, by the way. It’s Tennessee fall. 3 weeks of weather in the 70’s followed by low 50’s and rainy for 4 months. You know the drill drill drill.
